View Full Version : Do you use left or right side of your brain?
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,22535838-5012895,00.html?from=mostpop
I am right sided, but managed to make it go anti clockwise once, that felt wierd!!!
most of the people sitting here (at my work) are right sided
One guy claims it doesn't move and just flickers (we all think he is weird anyway :P)

Haha, I managed to switch between clockwise to anti-clockwise and back again.
Kinda fun :)

well i guess the reason for that is, that the image (imo) just turns directions after a certain amount of time...it went from clockwise->anti-clockwise multiple times within about 5 or 10 minutes for me. dunno, maybe it's just me >.<
but apart from that, i guess i was glad at first that i "use the right side of my brain" according to those facts...
oh and btw...if it really were to do with your brain i guess the dancer wouldn't change the foot it stands on, too :/
zee edit: i'd be very intereseted if my scepticism about this "test" proves if i'm right though...i'd just need a lot of people behind me to watch the image to tell me if i'm just stupid or that it really just randomly changes directions >.<
Could make it go either way. Generally by just concetraing on the foot, then closing my eyes then reopening them then the dancer was rotating anit-clockwise.
But by just looking at it, shes going clockwise.
However the test is flawed. As shes a woman she has breasts, they are on the front of her body, thus when her back is to us you can see shes standing on her left leg with her right leg out.
Her foot gets closer to the camera during the "down" motion thus indicates the direction of motion being towards the viewer, thus making this the front of the image, opposed to them viewing it from reverse.

That's what I thought as it seems logical... Some people can only see it going anti clockwise which makes no sense to me. I can't make her rotate left again at all now, when I did before it was only for a few seconds then it stopped as my brain got "freaked out" by it
If you look at the description its not suprising most of us see her going right mainly, being into Fantasy games etc we fit the description of righties

I noticed that too, she starts spinning one way(Clockwise or counter-clockwise, it seems random at each refresh, maybe it's server generated, who knows!), stops a bit and then (quite clearly) starts going the other way.
I'm not entirely sure how you can mistake the way she's moving though. Breasts, as Poag noted, make it easy to see, as well as the fact that one leg is out. This leg is either "hip first, then leg"-going with the flow(clockwise), or "foot/leg first, then hip"-against the flow(counter-clockwise). Oh well, details. Guess I'm a lefty after all. =P

Haha good point. And I found it hard to see her go clockwise. Took me quite some concentration to make me see otherwise.
maybe I should have put a poll on this post to see how many left vs right vs balanced people we have reading here.

Oh, also. "Fantasy" on that page doesn't refer to liking the Fantasy-genre btw. It means that you're not a "realist", but rather a "dreamer". Seeing possibilities only limited by your imagination, rather than possibilities limited by rationale. =P
hehe, I dont think many realists would like wow, don't they play games like civilisation or something real like chess? :P

With 9 million subscribers, I doubt none of them are realists. =P I think most(If not all) of the people that are into theorycrafting are "left brained", just to name an example.(But not necessarily realists, like with most things there's levels of "severity"(for lack of a better word >.>). Especially with the human mind, it's not all black or white, but rather black, white or various shades of gray.)

Seem to be able to spin it in either direction, just need a quick blink to switch direction.

Same here :P
Balanced.... mmhmm, I'm more of a rightie though
-edit I don't have to blink anymore to change the direction :p

I was focusing on the shadow of her foot on the ground, we would only see this shadow when the foot is going behind her, meaning it has to be travelling right to left, making her go anti-clockwise
This is why the lefties see the clockwise rotation ad this is the logical patth it should be taking, but the righties (I'm lefthanded btw, making me a definite rightie) won't put as much emphasis on the lgical rotation of the image and for them it's a 50-50 chance to be spinning in either way.

For me, it's clearly clockwise. I tried getting it to go anti-clockwise, and i can, but it feels odd, wrong, and i can't as soon as i see another part of the image moving. That said, looking at the descriptions, i should be more of a lefty, being more of a maths/stats person and such.

Haha, I watched the hair for ages, and theres a definite point where the dancer stops and starts rotating the other way, just look for it ^^
(you watch the hair for an obvious reason that I really cba to explain, it's to do with perception, the deal is you can't tell which leg she's standing on as the one frame where you could tell which foot it was is skipped, hence why your friend thinks he's seeing it flicker, because it skips telltale frames.

I'v just checked it with ImageReady, no, it's always rotating (counter) clockwise.

The 2D movement from someone rotating clockwise or counterclockwise is EXACTLY the same. So it's really up to your brain to decide ^^

Haven't quite figured out how to make it turn the other way yet. Manages by accident from time to time, clockwise for me btw.

If I make it spin anti-clock wise and then look away it changes direction.

Heh, awesome test, I made all my employees pass from my monitor and tell me what they see... Some saw both directions, me I see it ALWAYS going clockwise, I'm left handed mostly (in sports & writing) so it figures (as you should know that brain is linked to body in a 'X' way, meaning left handers have more developed the right side of brain and vice versa). I didnt manage to make her turn anticlockwise at all.
To the guy that says about Civ/chess vs fantasy games, well, I love Civ, and although I'm bored of chess I was a semi-pro Magic the gathering card gamer... but I love wow too, so this seems inconclusive...

Damn you must be my evil twin. I played chess some years ago, played in nationals twice, but bored of it now. I also played Magic, 4th in a PTQ once, damn I'm pro.... also won a bunch of local tourneys. And well and I love WoW too. This is scary. o_0

She is turning counter-clockwise for me, but I can quite easily change the direction by concentrating on the foot, both ways.

Heh nice, my best achievements was winning Nationals and then playing in San Francisco World Championship..then I got bored of it, (I did my cycle I guess and Wizards messed the game imo) and started playing WoW..that was my 'destruction', I barely manage to go to the gym even...
Rumours have it you play on Al'akir..dont tell me you picked a paladin again ?. If 2.3 doesnt save paladins, nothing will.. :(

Yep, the foot seems to be the key to this. First it was decidedly clockwise for me, then when I stared at her foot and covered the shadow for a sec it was suddenly spinning the other way.
There's no 'difference', so to speak, in the way she moves, the picture changes symetrically, that is the raised foot neither comes closer to the viewer or further from him, it just goes in a level line both ways, thus enabling to see her movement both ways, that is whichever way or brain sees it. Funny test.
Same with the boobs, they don't actually get hidden 'behind' her back when she turns 'away' from the viewer, it just merges into the black silhouette, which can be both frontal or back view :P

Thought it was a pretty cheap scam at first, until i realise it is actually an optical illusion thing :p
im very left brained,
but with a bit of concentration i can now get her to turn half circles back and forth, lol!
